There’s something special about walking in the crisp night air. Those frozen red cheeks. The brain fog you breathe out. Your ears about to drop off. It heightens your senses, clears your thinking, and calms your monkey mind. The way I move briskly to keep from freezing over reminds me of how we stay busy at work to avoid confrontation. And how we can’t sit still at home, addicted to distraction, keeping our inner demons temporarily at bay. Anything but drowning in that icy cold water. But what if we could learn to enjoy it? Maybe swim around a bit. Float on your back, staring at the sun that gives you life. I’m not sure what it is, but there’s something… Something about pounding the earth in the witness of trees makes me feel grounded. Something about that pale moonlight reminds me that I’m never alone. Something about that screeching bat in the distance reminds me there are things I cannot see. Something about my dog's leash tugging and sniffing reminds me never to lose my curiosity. Something about slipping on the edge of a muddy puddle reminds me that it can all change in a second. Something about the warmth rising from my beating heart reminds me to be grateful.

Cheers to no cheesy fake smiles, owning those grey hairs coming through, and feeling that hope on the horizon.
