Hey!
I was out walking today when a thought struck me. Bang! I should change the name of “Poetry & Purpose”.
Why?
I recently noticed there is another Substack with the same name. Which kind of annoyed me.
And I had been thinking for a long time anyway… It’s a bit generic and vague.
Also, the “&” can become a point of confusion between is it “and” or “&”.
So what next?
It should be something more focused and unique to me.
I want to narrow in on the “purpose” element. I’ve come to understand from 2+ years of writing what is at the core of everything I write:
An underlying search for meaning and purpose.
And then a name idea came to me:
Head Full Of Purpose
Yeah, I like that.
1) It hits the “purpose” niche. I want to focus my writing on the excitement and uncertainties of the new chapters we enter in life. This is inspired by my recent chapter changes of starting a new career, becoming a father, and entering midlife.
2) I’ll still share my poems, but not as the whole focus. So, I don’t want “Poetry” in the title. I’ve learned through conversations that instantly puts some people off, as poetry is misunderstood.
3) “Head” has a double meaning. Firstly, it’s my last name. Secondly, the “head full of” captures the overthinking and uncertainty that comes along with entering a new chapter in life — something which my work can help. And I’ve certainly got a head full of ideas here to explore.
4) I have a longer-term vision of having/sharing conversations with people on the “purpose” in their heads and the inner battles.
Here’s the new tagline:
A newsletter to help you find meaning and purpose as you enter your next chapter in life. See possibility, overcome struggle and thrive as you courageously lean into change.
Thanks for being with me as I evolve. For now I’ve kept the branding very similar to P&P. I’ll get the whole site updated by the next issue.
I welcome any feedback or ideas.
Cheers,
Matt
